Loyce Harpe Park (Formerly Carter Road)
Loyce Harpe Park Trail is approximately 10 miles in length. The trail is built on old phosphate land offering something for everyone from beginners to advanced riders. The trail meanders around scenic lakes up and down ridges with numerous wildlife encounters. Watch out for the notorious 14 foot gator known to the locals as “Big Mamma”.
San Felasco Hammock
The northern most 2,000 acres are designated for multi-use purposes including horseback riding, off-road bicycling, and hiking. Take I-75 to U.S. 441 (Milepost Exit 399 – Old Exit 78) and drive south 2.8 miles (through the city of Alachua). Turn right onto Progress Blvd. Drive 0.7 miles to the park entrance. (Continue past the end of the pavement and onto the grade road.)
Alafia River State Park
Some of the most challenging off-road bicycling trails in Florida can be found at Alafia River State Park. Located on what was once a phosphate mining site, the unique topography of the reclaimed land offers some of Florida’s most radical elevation changes. Alafia State Park is home to 17 miles of bike trails, ranging from beginner to advanced. For overnight stays, the park has a full-facility campground for both primitive and RV camping.
Balm Boyette
Balm Boyette Scrub Preserve has about 25 miles of single-track, including about 10 miles of double-track that has become single-track with usage. The sweet single track starts about 2 miles in from the parking area. Boyette is situated on 4,900 acres of upland scrub, located just south of Brandon. About a dozen lakes populate rolling grasslands at the far eastern end of the property, with the remainder being heavily covered with scrub-oak and pine. From beginner to advanced rider, Boyette has something for everyone.
Mt Dora Trail
Lake County mountain bikers no longer have to travel far to get in a ride. A nearly 3-mile trail was recently completed in Mount Dora. The trail, part of a 45-acre city park, was built by volunteers and will be maintained by the Ocala Mountain Bike Association. The single-track trail has some big changes in elevation and is challenging enough for avid mountain bikers, but beginners can improve their skills as well.
